A limb through the roof at eleven at night is not a roofing problem yet. It is a water problem. Every hour that water runs into a house it ruins more insulation, more drywall and more of whatever is stored under it. The first job is to make it stop.
What to Do Before We Get There
- Get everybody out from under the active leak
- Cut the power to that part of the house if water is anywhere near a light or an outlet
- Put buckets down and move furniture out of the room
- Poke a small hole in the center of a bulging ceiling, over a bucket, to drain it before it collapses
- Take photos of everything, from every angle, before you move anything
What We Do on the First Visit
The first visit is about stopping the water and nothing else. That usually means a tarp fastened down properly with furring strips, or a temporary patch over an opening, done in whatever weather is happening.
We photograph the damage before we cover it, because once a tarp is on, the evidence your insurance adjuster needs is underneath it. Those photos go to you the same night.
Then the Actual Repair
The permanent repair happens on a dry day with the right materials. Sometimes that is a week out, because after a real storm every roofer in the valley is booked. A properly fastened tarp will hold that long. A poorly fastened one will not, which is most of the difference between companies in the days after a storm.

The Trucks That Show Up After a Storm
A big hail event brings crews in from out of state within days. Some are fine. Many take the deductible, do fast work and are gone before the first winter tests it. You cannot call a company that no longer has an office in your state.

Questions About Emergency Roof Repair
Do you really answer at night?
Storm calls, yes. If a tree is in your roof at two in the morning, call. Routine questions get answered in the morning.
Is the emergency visit charged separately?
The stop the water visit is its own charge and it is quoted on the phone before we come out. If the permanent repair goes to us, that charge comes off the repair.
Will insurance pay for the tarp?
Emergency mitigation is usually covered, because the policy expects you to prevent further damage. Keep the receipt and the photos.
How long can a tarp stay on?
A properly installed tarp will hold for weeks. It is not a roof and it will not survive a winter. Do not let one become the plan.
